The Peanut Seller - nostalgia thread
|
A post from fellow WHOer "BritanniaPub" on another thread mentions the peanut seller on the old North Bank. He must be referring to the gap-toothed, slightly ginger-haired bloke who in the 60s and early 70s would toss bags of peanuts to the crowd from the edge of the pitch at half time. I remember that bloke well, because either side of half time he would come onto the North Bank (where I was) to watch the game, and get the crowd shouting if he thought the atmosphere was too quiet. Who else remembers him, and does anyone know who he was?

I vaguely remember a story that made the papers about a fan that bit a police dogs ear and was duly nicked. Might've been an arsenal home game, mid to late eighties. Fuck knows how true that was.

Oh and the Spurs game, there was only one of these, by common authority, over 50k in the old place through bungs on the turnstiles and broken down doors - absolute chaos on the SB and sporran bloke in seventh heaven all game

Monty, fuck me
I remember him as a real youngster with Dad, bless him and even younger brother. Old brown mac and shouting, hollering and blowing the horn
Dad knew more of him, a WW2 veteran apparently who had a touch of the PTSD, as we would call it today but a raving nutter if harmless who patrolled the lower SB WS corner
Anyone remember an altogether more menacing bloke in there? Fucking nutter, cropped hair, droopy tache, evil looking fella. I know that does not cut the odds much, but this lad had his boy with him who would have been around 5 and was distinguishable by his colours - on top of the DM's, Levi and flight jacket combo, he wore silk scarves on either wrist, flat cap claret and blue, WH belt, ribbons down his strides, badges all over his jacket and most unusually a club pennant like a sporran - merest hint of away in the SB, every week, he went wild and wanted to take them all, even plod gave him a swerve , eventually making his way back to his boy who Dad was minding
Those were the days, and what of the St Johns Boys in the corners? Grief they took, never did see why, gob dribbled on their flat hats, fags stubbed gently on shoulders, dreadful
Oh for a time machine back to then for one, just one game....

Pat Holland was a bit before my time so I didn't know that. I wonder if she's still kicking about.

I remember the tramp, whenever I sat in the Upper West Stand he was always in there! Think he was a genuine Harold Ramp, poor chap was filthy and obviously hadn't seen a bar of soap in months.

My first away trip outside London was to Southampton, stuck on a seat next to someone who might as well been a tramp, except he was enormously fat, too. He stank of stale sweat, and I'm pretty sure of stale semen too.
Got lost on the way back to the coach after the game, and the only seat left was next to him again, by the time I found the coach again.
First lesson in the fact that not all West Ham fans are wonderful.
And a long time before WHO was invented...

I always remember the bloke with his stall outside the ground that used to say "Hats, scarves, badges wear the colours".
Also many times queueing to get into Upton Park Station and seeing this bloke, who I guess must have been at the game, that was basically a tramp. West Ham hat on, matted black beard, shoes no laces and buckled. Very strange.
